Stem Cells Therapy

Stem cell therapy has initiated a new period of treatment in bone muscle joint health.

The period of repairing and renewing one's own natural cells and joints and tissues… ”

For centuries, scientists know that some animals can reproduce the body parts that they have lost. People have the ability to regenerate tissues, such as starfish or some reptiles.

Firstly, in the scientific studies conducted in 1950, studies were carried out on this cell-producing and regenerating system in our body and bone marrow transplantation was developed. For the first time in 1988, embryonic stem cells were kept alive in the laboratory. Then, instead of placing artificial tissues surgically on the defective organs of our body, studies on repairing with our own cells have been intensified.Since new stem cell cells have been detected in our body, various treatment methods have been developed. Stem cells are promising in many serious situations, from cancer to diabetes, cardiovascular disease to brain-nervous system diseases, and finally to bone muscle joint diseases.

What is Stem Cell?

Stem cells are the source of all the cells in our body. These are the main cells that make up all the tissues and organs in our body. These undifferentiated cells have two very important features.

1-Unlimited divisibility and self-renewal

2-Ability to transform into different organs and tissues

Bone marrow is the richest tissue of stem cells hidden in many tissues in our body. Today's technological advances enable these cells to be obtained intensively and transform into cells with the properties of the tissue in the body where they are placed. In the appropriate medium, the stem cells can be transformed into any other cell, such as the heart, lung, nerve, kidney, bone or cartilage cell. Studies on all tissues are continuing intensively. Treatment of some tissues such as nerve cell is still in experimental stage. However, in the bone, cartilage, skin and corneal diseases, stem cell therapy is accepted as a safe and effective treatment method by the medical community.

Joint calcification

Joint calcification (osteoarthritis = OA) develops in 90% of people over the age of 50. OA often affects the load-bearing areas. OA is caused by loss of smooth surface cartilage tissue at the ends of the bones forming the joint. The cartilage structure deteriorates, weakens and becomes thinner. Together, bony protrusions called osteophytes form and joint deformity begins. Over time, pain and joint movements limitation and functional difficulty in daily life (unable to run, unable to walk, etc.) develop. In the last stage, total joint prosthesis surgery is required.

Stem cell therapy in arthritis

In OA, cell destruction in cartilage was increased and chondrocytes producing cartilage cells were insufficient. In this case, there was a chance to be treated with stem cells which can be transformed into chondrocytes that can regenerate cartilage. In adults, fresh stem cells obtained from bone marrow were converted into cartilage producing chondrocytes after intra-articular injection. Since the cartilage tissue does not contain nerves and vessels, it is sufficient for the stem cells to become uniform cells. Clinical studies show that stem cells repair and thicken thinner and weakened cartilage in patients with OA. Thus, the joint is almost rejuvenated and the person is able to maintain daily life activities without the need for surgery. With the development of stem cell therapy, it may be foreseen that joint prosthesis operations will not be necessary soon.

How to obtain and apply stem cells from bone marrow?

Bone marrow is taken in a sterile operating room by a short, simple surgical procedure performed by an Orthopedic Specialist. During the procedure, the person does not feel any serious pain. The stem cells in the obtained bone marrow are centrifuged with a special technique to dissociate intensively. cells are given by injection into the joint of the person by the doctor. The platelet rich plasma obtained from the person's own blood again to accelerate the production of cartilage cells of stem cells can also be made in addition to the joint. returns to daily life but recommended partial rest for a period of 1 week.In this period the joint undergoing procedure should not be overused and protected. In accordance with the situation the doctor may recommend the use of crutches or orthotics.Injection pain and swelling can be seen after injection. drug should not be used and ice application should not be done. These negative effects on stem cells reduces the success of treatment.

In which case can it be applied?

  • Joint calcification (knee, hip, ankle, shoulder, hand)
  • Nonunion fractures
  • Avascular necrosis (hip, shoulder, knee, ankle)
  • Meniscus, labrum tears
  • Muscle-tendon ruptures

Who does not apply?

  • Obesity - obesity (body mass index above 30)
  • It has advanced calcification and the cartilage tissue in the joint is completely finished.
  • Immunosuppressive drug users

Side effects-complications

  • Since it is performed under sterile conditions, the risk of infection is low.
  • Allergic reaction does not occur because it is the person's own tissue.
  • Mild bleeding may occur at the site of bone marrow aspiration or at the injection site.
  • Rarely, nerve damage may occur during injection.
